Robert Power
BA, Dipl(JCA), BEd, MEd(IT), EdD 

Rob Power was born in East York, Ontario, in October 1974, and moved to Newfoundland in 1981 with his family, where he grew up living in Mount Pearl and St. John’s. Rob graduated from O’Donel High School in Mount Pearl in 1992, after which he served as a Supply Technician with 56th Field Engineer Squadron in the Canadian Forces Reserves, while studying for his Bachelor of Arts at Memorial University.

 

After graduating with a BA in 1996, Rob earned an Honours Diploma in Journalism and Communication Arts at Lawrence College in St. John’s. From April 1997 until August 2000, Rob worked as a broadcast journalist at VOCM Radio in St. John’s, during which time he published his first novel, The Caster. He returned to Memorial University in September 2000 to study for a Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary) degree, and completed the Master of Education (Information Technology) program with Memorial University and the University College of Cape Breton in August 2003.

 

From September 2003 until September 2005, Rob worked as a Technology / Learning Resources teacher at John Burke High School in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. From September 2005 until September 2013, Rob worked as an Information Technology Instructor and the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Training & Testing Centre Coordinator with the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar. Rob currently works as an Instructional Developer with the Advanced Learning Technologies Center, part of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Educational Innovation, at CNA-Q.

 

Rob has successfully defended his dissertation research for the Doctor of Education in Distance Education program at Athabasca University. He is also a member-at-large with the Executive of theInternational Association for Mobile Learning (IAmLearn), and he has worked as the Project Manager and Conference Chair for the 12th World Conference on Mobile and Contextual Learning (mLearn 2013). His research interests include educational and distance education applications of information technology. He is particularly interested in pursuing further studies and research into:

 

  • mLearning theory and practice
  • the use of information technology to increase academic collaboration among educators and students
  • the effective use of information technology to facilitate online and distributed learning
  • the use of mobile devices for the dissemination of learning materials
  • the effective use of information technology to enhance learning in the classroom
